"Madam President, Sakineh Ashtiani is the face of the executions in Iran, and the symbol of the injustice of the country’s judicial proceedings and its violation of fundamental rights. I wish to add my voice to those of the international solidarity movements that are demanding that the sentence be quashed and Sakineh Ashtiani freed immediately: to demand her freedom is also to fight for equal rights for women, freedom of expression and freedom to actively participate in a free society.
I strongly support anti-discrimination causes and, in particular, the cause of Iranian women; I would stress their role in the struggle for democracy in Iran. The courage and determination of many Iranian women are an inspiration and we must support them in this struggle for democracy and for the future of Iran with peace, freedom and equal rights."@en1
