"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, the primary objective of the common agricultural policy has always been to guarantee fair revenues for farmers, and I believe we should stick to that path. Following the review instituted by the Commission, a number of discrepancies from the initial principle have come to light which we all cannot overlook. Our farmers are convinced that their work is undervalued in economic terms. Their move from the first stage in the supply chain to become important players in the second stage today is no longer seen as a determining factor for stabilising the final price. It is necessary to control the fluctuations in commodity prices, which only hurt the consumer. I think it would be useful to review how items move along the supply chain, so as to prevent an increase in the price of goods that is incompatible with a fair distribution of the cost according to the work done. It is important to check whether the asymmetry in the cost of a product between the first and last stages of the supply chain is rising, thus hurting consumers. There would be a danger of placing products on the market at higher prices that would not reflect an increase in quality."@en1
