"Madam President, the demise of the Deepwater Horizon oil platform has caused the greatest oil disaster in our history. To date, hundreds of millions of litres of crude oil have poured into the Gulf of Mexico causing massive losses to sea life, as well as land animals. The global consequences for the ecosystem are disastrous.
The EU must make a constructive contribution to consolidated legal regulations for oil extraction so that oil companies cannot cut corners in relation to the quality of materials used or the safety measures they apply. Cost efficiency cannot be used as an argument in the face of possible threats to the health of people and wildlife caused by negligence. In addition, greater focus on renewable energies can provide an answer to increasing energy consumption worldwide.
My message to the Commission is that we must bring about change in this area, moving away from fossil fuels and towards biogenic fuels. We need to reduce our existing dependency in this area."@en1
