"Parliament is giving its verdict on the opening of negotiations on accession to the EU in a resolution which highlights the positive aspects of this application.
Iceland, with its strong democratic and parliamentary tradition, has nothing to gain from acceding to the EU.
As a member of the Delegation for relations with Iceland, I am voting in the interests of that country; in other words, I am voting against this resolution and against its accession.
Indeed, the country’s entire fishing and agricultural tradition, essential for its economy and a symbol of its identity, is at risk of being sacrificed on the altar of the CAP and the common fisheries policy. As a people who have always been anxious to preserve their independence and sovereignty, Icelanders are in danger of falling out of the frying pan into the fire when the EU imposes its ‘
e’ and its accession conditions on the island, which has already been severely rocked by the financial crisis."@en1
