"Mr President, ladies and gentlemen, I agree with you, Mr President, that it is the European Union’s duty to play a fundamental role in international issues and that we must speak with one, strong voice. It is most certainly our responsibility to intervene promptly and decisively each time human rights are oppressed, no matter where in the world that happens. I hope that the next six months of the Belgian Presidency will be distinguished by an unwavering commitment on those issues. To demonstrate that commitment, I ask for immediate attention to be paid to what is happening in certain Libyan prisons in the Sahara Desert: 250 Eritrean citizens, including women and children, have been shut up for days in inhumane conditions, in violation of all international regulations on human rights and asylum. Many of these citizens were denied political refugee status, even though they met all the necessary requirements. The Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Frattini, actually accused the European Union of not even having published a press release. I think now is the time for the European Union to speak with one, strong voice. Right now, we must not turn our heads and look the other way, because 250 people are asking us to save them from death."@en1
