"Madam President, we have experienced a financial crisis which is very serious and deep, which has shaken the world, destabilised our economy, exacerbated unemployment and accelerated our debt, and we are still continuing to suffer its effects.
Therefore, it seems to me that our responsibility is clear. We must do everything in our power so that this does not happen again. This is why it is vital that rapporteurs, the Commission and the Council move forward together and quickly to finally achieve a worthy agreement. We need regulation and supervision. We need independent, strong authorities in the interest of Europeans. What the United States has succeeded in doing, the European Union must also do. This is the only way open to us to change things, and this is why we must succeed."@en1
