"I voted in favour of this European Parliament resolution because it deals with the 2009 activity report of Parliament’s Petitions Committee. Throughout this resolution, this committee takes stock of the situation regarding one of the direct rights available to European citizens for making their point of view count at the level of the European institutions. This is therefore an instrument of democracy and citizenship. The major themes of the petitions concern the environment, fundamental rights, justice and the internal market, and essentially originate from Germany, Spain, Italy and Romania. I am very pleased with the progress that has been made in implementing the recommendations of the European Parliament’s Petitions Committee for improving its work, but also with the proposals made in order to allow this right to be better exercised by European citizens, such as the demand for simplification of the procedures and, in particular, the possibility of starting a petition via the Internet. I do have one small regret: that French citizens make very little use of this procedure."@en1
