"Mr President, to begin with, I would like to point out and to emphasise the growing significance of the Committee on Petitions as an institution which rightly comes to the aid of the average EU citizen. The right to submit petitions to the European Parliament is an important form of democracy at EU level. For many people affected by different problems, it is an important way of defending their interests.
I would like to point out the need for cooperation and contacts between the Committee on Petitions of the European Parliament and its counterparts in the national parliaments in order to create a common and complementary system for the defence of citizens’ rights. The monitoring functions of the Committee on Petitions with respect to the work of the European Commission are exceptionally important.
Finally, I would like to mention the necessity of familiarising our citizens with the competences of different EU and national institutions."@en1
