lpv:translated text	"I applaud the adoption of this report, which is a pledge to urge the European Union and its Member States to protect and support the defenders of human rights, who play a fundamental role in protecting and promoting basic human rights, often putting their own lives at risk. The EU must strongly support the defence of fundamental rights, the promotion of human rights, the rule of law and democracy. I note that the Treaty of Lisbon, namely Articles 3 and 21, places the promotion and protection of human rights at the centre of the Union’s external action. I therefore believe that promoting human rights, as a fundamental and objective value of the Union’s external policy, should be duly reflected in the European External Action Service. The promotion, protection and safety of the defenders of human rights must be deemed to be a priority in the European Union’s relations with third countries. I would also highlight the importance of freedom of expression and the role of social communication media as engines for action in defending human rights."@en1
