"Faced by the deepening economic and social crisis – a bitter reproach hanging over the EU and the economic and social policies that it has been pursuing – the Commission and the European Council are showing signs of unprecedented shamelessness. In fact, the declared objectives of ‘recovering from the crisis’, ‘growth’, ‘social cohesion’ and ‘economic cohesion’, which have been repeatedly stated and are unquestionably necessary, clearly contradict the imposition of the irrational criteria of the so-called Stability and Growth Pact, as well as what is termed ‘expenditure-focused’ fiscal consolidation, done at any cost and without taking the specific nature of individual Member States into consideration, especially those with weaker and more dependent economies. We are well aware of the meaning and implications of this approach: greater pressure on the job market, on the labour force – in the sense of devaluing it and intensifying exploitation – and on the social protection, health and education systems. In short, it aims to dismantle the social functions of governments. The severity of these approaches, handing workers and ordinary people the bill for a crisis that was not of their making, contrasts with the indulgent attitude towards financial capital, since little more than vague, non-specific intentions have been announced, and even then they are utterly inadequate and no one knows when they will be put into practice ..."@en1
