"Mr President, the flooding during the summer did a lot of damage in Ireland, particularly to the infrastructure, to shops and to housing. In total, it cost almost EUR 1 billion.
However, all the blame cannot be attached to the rainfall; the biggest problem in Ireland was that the waterways have not been maintained. The Waterways Directive is a very important directive. As well as that, a lot of damage has been done – and is still being done – to wildlife, particularly to rare birds, because the Birds Directive has not been implemented either."@en1
