lpv:translated text	"Madam President, we believe it to be essential to include the self-employed in this directive, and this view is shared by the representatives of both unions and employers’ associations in my country, who have expressly requested the inclusion of the self-employed in this directive. We believe that there are several reasons for their inclusion. Firstly, because of workers’ safety: self-employed hauliers deserve the same protection as other hauliers, not just when they are driving, but also when they are undertaking other tasks that are directly related to a road transport operation. Secondly, for reasons of fair competition, as bringing back discrimination between self-employed and employed workers will distort both the labour market and the transport market. Finally, it also seems inappropriate to me that each Member State should be able to apply the provisions of the directive to drivers if it so wishes. There needs to be a general rule for the entire EU, since the majority of hauliers work outside their own countries; without it, fair competition would be impeded."@en1
