"The European Commission is drafting a Green Paper on pensions, which the European executive will use in an attempt to prompt discussion on the topic of a European pensions strategy. The main lines of this strategy must aim to resolve the demographic and budgetary problems which Member States are facing. Bearing in mind the European Union’s ageing population, the pressures exerted on public finances will grow significantly in the coming years.
Regardless of the political situation in Member States, the major priority of such a strategy must be to guarantee a decent standard of living for those who have retired. We must not forget that pensioners represent a ‘captive’ social group. They no longer have, in many instances, the chance to opt for an alternative source of income and employment due to their advanced age. This is why I urge this priority to be the main objective of this document."@en1
