"I believe that those committees that will have a heavier workload as a result of the entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon need to be reinforced. This justifies an increase in the number of staff for Parliament’s and the groups’ secretariats in these committees. However, I do not share the view that we MEPs need more staff. I would have liked to have seen Parliament’s resources being enhanced first and foremost by means of redistribution and measures to improve efficiency, so that the total budget is not increased. In my capacity as group leader for the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament in the Committee on Budgets, I also took this line in the negotiations with Parliament’s Presidency. In the end, we reached a compromise to the effect that the proposal will now be partly funded through savings of EUR 4.4 million. I still believe that further savings should have been included in the proposal but, as I played an active role in the negotiations, I have chosen to support the compromise achieved."@en1
