"Mr President, the biggest unemployment march in the last ten years is due to take place in Greece tomorrow. Greek workers are demonstrating against the measures taken by the government, workers who neither work less nor are paid more than their counterparts; you can see the data for yourselves.
Mr Rehn, it is major hypocrisy to call this tripartite financing mechanism a ‘rescue and solidarity’ mechanism. It is a European punishment mechanism, with the International Monetary Fund playing bad cop. For six months, we have been suggesting that you make use of Article 122 of the Treaty of Lisbon. For six months, we have been calling on the European Central Bank to change its policy. For six months, we have been calling on you to investigate the unacceptable American credit rating agencies. You did not do so. You let the speculators run riot, you brought the International Monetary Fund into the euro area and now you are asking for harsh austerity programmes. This mechanism must be debated by the European Parliament, in accordance with Article 218 of the Treaty of Lisbon; we need a real debate on solidarity policy."@en1
