"Surprising though it may seem, the phrase ‘made in’, which we find on many clothes labels, is not compulsory today and its use varies greatly from one Member State to another. Having considered the Commission’s proposal for a regulation on the time-to-market of a new fibre, we used it to remedy this labelling problem. In fact, in the absence of European legislation, there is a risk that products will appear that were manufactured in third countries, but which bear an inscription suggesting that they were manufactured in Europe. The report also calls on the Commission to consider labelling which would give consumers access to information on the social and environmental manufacturing conditions of the products they buy."@en1
