This report does not give consideration to the real problems that are being experienced in Latin America and does not set out the essential points that should be included in the EU strategy for relations with Latin America.
For example, it glosses over all the economic and social problems that will result from the signing of free trade agreements, and it accepts the normalisation of relations with Honduras as an incontestable fact, ignoring the
and the still recent murders of members of the Resistance Front against the
. It ignores the situation in Colombia: the crimes of the paramilitaries, and the persecution of trade-union members and politicians are not problems worthy of any mention. It does, on the other hand, criticise Bolivia and Venezuela, although it never makes explicit reference to these countries.
However, it says nothing about the redeployment of the United States Fourth Fleet in the region, the plan for the United States to use seven Colombian military bases, or the intervention operations that are undertaken from military bases in the territories of EU and NATO countries.
Regrettably, the majority of the proposals that we made on the aforementioned issues were rejected, so in the end we voted against the resolution."@en1
