lpv:translated text	"The 2020 strategy which has been adopted by the European Council is not acceptable to me as a socialist. It lacks a clear statement of a strategic objective (combating poverty) and does not contain measures for achieving this goal. Poverty affects 80 million (20%) of Europeans, and 17% have such low incomes that they cannot meet their basic needs. This is not only an economic problem, but is also a violation of human rights. Poverty causes loss of health, restricted access to education, homelessness, discrimination and social exclusion. According to a report of the European Commission published in 2008, one in five (19%) Poles lives below the poverty line, with 26% of children living in poverty (the highest level in the Union). We need a long-term strategy for fighting poverty as an integral part of EU policy. In accordance with the proposals of my political group, the strategy should be assisted by reform of the common agricultural policy. It is essential to ensure food security to all EU citizens in all of its aspects (physical and economic access to food which meets high health and quality standards). The 2020 strategy will be a valuable document for EU citizens only on condition that social objectives are included. Therefore, I am asking the Commission and the Council to: 1. recognise the fight against poverty as a principal, strategic objective; 2. establish and precisely quantify particular objectives relating to the systematic curtailment of poverty; 3. elaborate and adopt (at the June summit) specific indicators of poverty; 4. specify dates for the realisation of individual partial objectives."@en1
