"I would like to welcome the fact that the text detailing the European Council’s final conclusions referred to the particularly important role played by the cohesion policy and common agricultural policy in ensuring the EU’s competitiveness. The common agricultural policy in particular – a topic which is currently the subject of heated debates prior to the forthcoming reform of this area – is a special subject because of its importance. It is not only more than 12 million European farmers but consumers as well who are expecting specific results after the CAP has been reformed, which will have a positive impact on their standard of living and the quality of food being eaten, on the one hand, and on the competitiveness of Europe’s agriculture and food industry, on the other hand. The European Union is duty-bound to take into account the hopes which its citizens have pinned on the future CAP when implementing its future policies."@en1
