"In relation to today’s vote on the nomination of candidate Members of the European Court of Auditors, I would like to express my support for the decision we have made concerning the controversial candidate, Mr Fazakas.
According to official documents, for many years, Mr Fazakas supported the Communist dictatorship in Hungary, as a member of the Hungarian security service. The universally known facts cast a dark shadow over his curriculum vitae and should have been taken into account at an earlier stage. The EU has always stood in defence of democracy, freedom of speech and freedom of conscience, and those values were, for decades, violated by the socialist regime, not only in Hungary, but also in the many other countries of what was known as the Eastern bloc. It is true that times have changed, and today we can all enjoy extensive liberties, but we must also remember those who restricted that freedom."@en1
