"This vote on the Council recommendation on the appointment of Vítor Constâncio as Vice-President of the European Central Bank comes as no surprise to us. His actions as Governor of the Bank of Portugal have always fitted in well with the liberal guidelines of the ECB. The policies followed by the ECB and imposed in the Member States of the European Union by it, which are profoundly damaging to national interests and sovereignty and constitute an attack on the rights of the workers and people of Portugal, are basically the same as those that Dr Constâncio advocated and still advocates as Governor of the Bank of Portugal. We will continue to fight these policies, regardless of who is involved in their management. That is why we voted against this report, since the answers that it gives reaffirm the same old ECB line. It advocates the irrational criteria of the Stability Pact and exchange policy and other macro-economic guidelines, as well as continuously devaluing the role of production and labour."@en1
