Mr President, I am delighted with the European Citizens’ Initiative because citizens currently have the chance to indicate their wishes just once every five years, but this way they will be able to play a genuine role in the European Union in the interim, too. It is also important, therefore, that they know when they can come knocking at our door. In fact, it is not our door but that of the European Commission. Does the man on the street know when it is possible to appeal to the Commission? A far-reaching information campaign is necessary to let citizens know. I must say that the critical point to make in this regard is that the citizens’ initiative will be truly mature only if all the European institutions take the one million citizens’ voices seriously; and ministers and Heads of State or Government should also listen to these. Of course, this means that, if one million European citizens wish to dispense with the Strasbourg site, that desire too must be heeded."@en1
