"Instead of having a discussion about implementation of the Europe 2020 strategy, I suggest we concentrate on areas where we do, really, have an influence. We are, certainly, able to help safeguard the common market from protectionism. We are, certainly, able to make European law easier for businesspeople, so that it does not limit the competitiveness of the European economy. Better legislation is, of course, a particular responsibility of this very House, of this Parliament.
Member States will reform if they are exposed to pressure from the world economy. This is why it is so important to give the Member States maximum freedom in the area of competitiveness of systems of taxation, social systems and economic law. By bringing in harmonisation in these areas, we are only maintaining the ills of the European social model. It is freedom, and not successive strategies, which is the correct response to the crisis."@en1
