"I would like to join with the many declarations of sympathy for the victims of the torrential storm that battered Madeira on 20 February, as well as the declarations of solidarity with all those who are suffering the pain of grief for lost family and friends and lost possessions. I would also like to stress the constant need to consolidate the European Union’s capacity to provide help to populations affected by natural disasters. By losing personal property such as their homes, their livelihoods and their jobs, these populations could fall into a desperate situation. In these cases, social justice is only achieved through solidarity, not forgetting that all of society benefits from each of its citizens having decent living conditions. Therefore, it is not too much to insist on the need to enlarge the European Union Solidarity Fund and make it more flexible. In this context, I would like to declare my total support for the resolution on Madeira adopted today by the European Parliament."@en1
