"The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) negotiations concerning provisions of copyright law and combating counterfeiting and product and Internet piracy represent, without doubt, an important step towards the protection of intellectual property. Regrettably, the Commission’s information policy in relation to the negotiations leaves a lot to be desired. The lack of transparency about the state of the negotiations makes it difficult for the European Parliament to play a constructive part in drawing up the provisions and thus to ensure, in advance, that there is no curtailment of Europeans’ civil rights and no violation of the directives on data protection. I support the motion for a resolution (RC7-0154/2010 ) and thus the European Parliament’s call on the Commission to frame its information policy in relation to the ACTA negotiations in a more transparent, complete and thus also holistic way."@en1
