"I welcome the important place that has been given to climate change in the Communication from the Commission entitled ‘Europe 2020 – A European strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth’.
There are two aspects of this worth highlighting. Firstly, investing in greener, low carbon technologies is an important instrument. These investments will protect the environment, while also creating new business opportunities and new jobs. The European Union can play an important role in this sector on the global market. The second aspect is the importance of the ‘Resource efficient Europe’ flagship initiative. The request made by the Commission for Member States to use the Structural Funds to invest in constructing energy-efficient public buildings certainly provides part of the solution. However, I think that we need to devote at least as much attention to the residential sector, more specifically to the collective residential buildings constructed in the past which were heavy consumers of energy in some Member States, especially those in Eastern Europe."@en1
