"Mr President, Mr President of the Commission, the rights of women and the right to live in dignity are fundamental human rights which must be promoted by the European Union.
For this reason, in view of the glaring inequalities which are persisting and even worsening, including the pay gap between men and women, poverty and insecure employment – all problems which predominantly affect women – it is not enough to publish a Charter of Women’s Rights which is essentially vague and imprecise, and which was not preceded by any discussion with women’s organisations or with Parliament itself.
Therefore, I ask whether the European Commission is prepared to prioritise such questions about the protection of women’s rights by means of concrete measures, particularly through the development of the new equality strategy which Parliament itself is preparing; a report that I hope will be taken into account."@en1
