"Gender equality is a fundamental principle in our times, but gender inequality persists, and the strategic objectives of the Beijing Platform are still a long way from being achieved. I welcome the motion for a resolution to be voted upon today in plenary, as it is an incentive for improving institutional mechanisms for promoting gender equality. Gender mainstreaming in development cooperation is essential for promoting a more prosperous, fairer and richer society. I would like to emphasise the importance of the role that women play in science and technology. Women are increasingly present in areas of scientific research, but they remain a long way from the top of their careers and the centres of decision making. Taking advantage of this potential is essential for promoting a fair balance and for supporting growth and employment. It is crucial to consider gender mainstreaming in different policy fields as one of the pillars of a more prosperous, fairer and richer society."@en1
