".
For me, there is no question that a close and constructive partnership between the European Union and the United States of America is necessary, in particular when it comes to combating terrorism. Nonetheless, I have voted against the interim SWIFT agreement, because it does not clarify fundamental data protection issues. The side-stepping of the European Parliament in the negotiations for the agreement was also unacceptable and highly problematic. Although I believe an international agreement regulating data exchange to be necessary, civil liberties and fundamental rights must still be protected."@en1
