| lpv:translated text | "The European Parliament has been handed more power, but this power has not been put to constructive use today. In the run-up to the debate on SWIFT, a great deal went wrong. The Commission and the Council gave Parliament too little information too late. This must not happen again.
Yet this is not a good enough reason to suddenly discontinue a programme that has been functioning reasonably for a number of years, a programme that has demonstrably protected both European and US citizens on several occasions. I have voted against the report, therefore, and am in favour of a nine-month extension of the SWIFT Agreement. When a new agreement is negotiated, clear arrangements must be made for better protection of personal data. We must prevent unnecessary data exchange and must not allow data to be stored indefinitely."@en1 |
