"I voted in favour of recital X and most parts of paragraph 38, abstaining on one part of paragraph 38, for the following reasons: As a main principle, women’s sexual and reproductive rights should be respected, particularly in the context of equality between men and women, which is guaranteed by the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights (Art. 23). However, I believe women should learn to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies; in other words, when there is easy access to contraception and specialised advice, then abortion is more difficult to justify. Many in my electorate in Romania would be disappointed if I voted differently. In addition, the past is still alive in our minds – as highlighted in the 2006 report commissioned by the President of Romania – when the Communist party took draconian measures against abortion in order to ensure the control of the party over women’s private lives. Many women died as a result of illegal abortions, performed without medical help."@en1
