"Madam President, one of the priorities of the Council Presidency is to increase the influence of the EU on the international stage and, more specifically, in Latin America. However, what kind of influence are we talking about? The current concept of international relations affords little space to democracy and human rights. Would the Council wish to use free trade agreements to support regimes which constantly violate human rights in Latin America? I would like to cite the example of Peru, where acts of violence committed in Bagua are a terrible illustration of the way in which the government collaborates with multinationals by confiscating land from the indigenous populations for financial purposes. Already, almost 70% of the land is in the hands of multinationals and mining companies. Another notorious example is that of Colombia, which is the most dangerous country for trade unionists, given the hundreds of people assassinated there. My question is as follows: do you intend to put the issue of human rights once again at the core of EU foreign policy in Latin America?"@en1
