"Commissioner, Mrs Malmström, in contradistinction to my Polish fellow Members, I am not going to be so critical in my evaluation of European Union activities in this area, because I want to express satisfaction at the Council statement of 12 December, which comments unequivocally on the recent Presidential elections in Abkhazia. I also want to stress support for the European Union’s activities, because the EU is unequivocal in its recognition of the independence of both these regions at international level. I know what I am talking about from my experience of dealings with Belarus.
Nonetheless, I agree that the European Union must be resolute in the matter of enforcing the six-point ceasefire plan negotiated by President Sarkozy. I say this especially in view of the disturbing declarations of the High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Mrs Ashton, that she is going to conduct quiet diplomacy. I hope quiet diplomacy will not mean consent to the breaking of agreements made on behalf of Russia with representatives of the European Union."@en1
