"Mr President, public access to documents means the right of citizens to participate in decision making and acquire information in order to do so. The Treaty of Lisbon endorses this fundamental right of EU citizens. If the European Parliament does not defend this fundamental right, who will?
That is why it is very important that we adopt a strong and clear position in favour of transparency in this sitting. We should not accept any backward steps, or those the Commission is proposing.
I can assure you that there are a lot of misconceptions going around concerning what we are deciding on here. We do not want to jeopardise international negotiations, but we think that citizens have a right to know what matters are being discussed with foreign powers that affect their rights. Neither do we conclude here that every Member of the European Parliament should make the contents of his or her e-mail public. If anyone is afraid of that, there is absolutely no need to be."@en1
