"While we are talking at the moment about the digitisation of the world’s book heritage by a private company, in this case, Google, it seems as if we are only dealing with the present. It was stated in one speech that those of us here will continue, at any rate, to use printed books. However, whatever option we pave the way for, it will offer future generations as well an opportunity or a disadvantage which we obviously have to deal with. Therefore, the main issue here is not only, as has been said, that this will affect Europe’s cultural industry. No, such a decision will influence European culture. In fact, there is an extreme danger that a company will own the world’s cultural heritage or, looking into the future, its cultural present. This is why it is imperative for Europe to devise its own clear strategy in this area."@en1
