"Minorities add value to a nation as long as they can preserve their cultural values. This is why it is particularly important to preserve minorities’ cultures. From this point of view, I believe that Romania, the Member State which I represent, has one of the most modern sets of laws protecting minorities. In Romania, minorities can address courts in their mother tongue. They have schools where instruction is given in their mother tongues. All 19 of Romania’s minorities are represented in Parliament. In areas where minorities account for 20% of the population, the local authorities must also produce documents in the minorities’ language. All decisions are issued in Romanian as well as in the language of the minorities in that region. I believe that Romanian legislation in this area can be held up as a model of good practice and as a benchmark whenever referring to minorities’ rights and the use of their languages."@en1
