"Mr President, freedom of information is a very important issue and, for my part, I voted in favour of it. We must remember, however, that freedom also entails responsibility, and we in Europe need critical and transparent communications. We need to ensure that this is also the case in the future. European history shows what sort of horrors have resulted when the media has been closed off and information has not been allowed to flow freely. On this matter, I think that we in the European Parliament need to look at the whole of Europe, and not just at an individual Member State. That is why we need to extend the issue and establish principles that we adhere to, whether it is socialists, liberals or the right who are in power. The same rules have to apply to everyone and in all cases, we must act to ensure that freedom of information will be preserved. That is one of the fundamental freedoms that I hope the European Union will also preserve in the years to come. I also hope that everyone will be treated according to the same standards."@en1
