"The Irish’s unambiguous
to the Treaty of Lisbon is an important step towards a united Europe and a minor blow for the eurosceptics.
This decision is all the more important because it was made by the people, voting in a referendum, and by a nation which had been given a year to consider whether or not its initial
would be of any real benefit to Ireland.
Along with the Czech Republic, the spotlight will now fall on the credibility of the United Kingdom, an EU Member State where the leader of the opposition, Mr David Cameron, has promised to hold a referendum on the Treaty, if he wins the 2010 election. He has made that promise, regardless of the fact that both houses of the UK Parliament ratified the Treaty of Lisbon in mid-2008.
What will become of the credibility of the decisions and international commitments of the United Kingdom, one of our Member States, which has already ratified the Treaty, but is now threatening to suspend its decisions and commitments, two years after adopting them?"@en1
