"Mr President, democracy, for me, means posing a question and then getting an answer. Democracy does not mean continuing to ask a question until you get the answer you had anticipated beforehand. If the Members of this Parliament, and if the members of the Commission and the Council are not, in fact, so afraid of the populace, why is it that there was only one country where attempts to prevent the holding of a referendum did not succeed? The governments and the institutions of the EU succeeded in preventing the holding of referendums in the other 26 Member States. That is not democracy."@en1
