"Commissioner, you see as progress a 3% - 8% increase in the price of finished products such as skimmed milk and butter. In my view, this is an insult to our farmers. The main problem is the price at which milk is purchased from farmers. In the Czech Republic, for example, the purchase price is up to 25% lower than the production cost, but the price of the finished product which is then sold in the shops would easily cover all the farmers’ costs. The main problem, therefore, is that there is a large hole somewhere. This problem has to be resolved. In the Czech Republic we now have fewer cattle than we had after the Napoleonic wars.
