"Madam President, the provisional solution to the Opel dossier contains good news for some people but, above all, a great deal of bad news for the thousands of people who are to lose their jobs, and I understand from this afternoon’s announcement that these will also be from Antwerp. This is not to mention the supply chain, where large numbers of jobs will also be lost. These are all social tragedies, and I believe that three things are important in this regard. Firstly, the Commission must now use all its competences to guarantee that the negative consequences of the announced restructuring take an honest, objective course. This is essential to preserve Europe’s credibility and to prevent people from getting the feeling that all workers are not equal. Secondly, starting now, the Commission must put all its energy into helping to offer a new future in those places where jobs are being lost. Thirdly – and this, I think, is the main lesson to be learnt – we need a more proactive Commission, we need a European industrial policy, a perspective on the challenges, the opportunities and the way problems are tackled from a European point of view – and this for transnational industrial sectors such as the car industry."@en1
