"Ladies and gentlemen, Hungary and the Hungarian minorities are constantly bringing up the issue of national minorities. Through recourse to half-truths and sometimes even lies, they try to manipulate European public opinion in their favour. What is the truth? Over the past eighty years, national minorities in Hungary have been all but wiped out, while Europe looked on in silence. The Slovak minority has also been cut down from 300 000 to 10 000 members. The size of the Hungarian minorities in surrounding countries, including Slovakia, has remained constant. Over the past two years, six Roma citizens have been murdered in Hungary and dozens have been seriously wounded. There are fears of attacks against Jews, while other forms of extremism are on the increase and are spilling across Hungary’s borders. This aggression is not being handled properly in Hungary and it must be condemned. European institutions should take a stronger approach to these manifestations of extremism."@en1
