For that reason, European social models must be modernised in view of long-term developments, while at the same time preserving their initial values. In the context of the present economic crisis, it is extremely important that social policy go hand in hand with economic policy. For these methods to be effective, they must be democratically structured, i.e. on the principle of working from the grassroots upwards, and they must be implemented at the local level, i.e. closer to the citizens. The proposal was in the spirit of these principles, and for that reason I support the report prepared under the guidance of Mr Silva Peneda."@en1
