"Mr President, I very much welcome the idea of the establishment of the European Asylum Support Office, as the situation in third countries, especially in Africa and the Middle East, is continuously deteriorating. I object to any notions of ‘Fortress Europe’ that would be isolated from the problems of the Third World, many of which have directly or indirectly been caused by the former colonizers. Europe cannot turn its back on its commitments to countries that once were recklessly exploited.
The European Asylum Support Office will provide a coordinated approach to the Common European Asylum Policy. I agree with the principle of solidarity within the European Union when it comes to asylum seekers. The borders of some Member States constitute the external border of the European Union, and therefore they are constantly affected by flows of immigration.
Hopefully the European Asylum Support Office will help to ease the burden of the Member States concerned."@en1
