"On 9 May 1950 Robert Schumann proposed the ‘Schumann Plan’, which laid the foundations for economic cooperation between European nations. Europe’s great politicians and thinkers understood very well that the force which could unite Europe was a common approach to economic problems. Inter-state financial and economic groups, which have created added value and jobs, formed the basis of this approach.
By implementing their own national economic recovery plans, Member States have disrupted the activities of these European groups; therefore we are experiencing many problems, which we will have even more of, if we are unable to rebuild the coordination of economic policy at European Union level.
I hope that, among the new leaders of Europe, there will be people like Robert Schumann, Jean Monet and Konrad Adenauer, who will look beyond their own national interests."@en1
