"( ) I have today chosen to abstain from the vote on the Roaming II Regulation, which proposes regulation of the prices for mobile telephone services abroad. The proposal, which was a compromise arrived at by the large groups, contained many good ideas, including more information for customers to enable them to avoid huge telephone bills after a stay abroad. The reason for my abstention is not complicated. I do not believe that politicians in the EU should set prices on the free market. The whole point of a market economy is that prices are determined by supply and demand, not by whatever politicians in Brussels consider to be ‘fair’. We already have price regulation in place as a result of the Roaming I Regulation. The result has been that operators cluster around this price ceiling, which does not benefit consumers. Our task as politicians is to ensure that there is good competition on the internal market. I agree that this is not the case with regard to roaming services, but instead of Soviet-style price regulation, it would have been better to have measures promoting competition, for example a prohibition on the large operators using price discrimination against smaller operators who want access to foreign networks."@en1
