"One of the objectives we outlined in Lisbon in 2000 was a knowledge-based society. Although we now know that we will have to scale back our objectives, or rather that we will achieve them later, we must not slacken in our efforts to achieve them. I too have therefore backed the report of Mr Schmitt, which attempts to identify potential problems in the area of education that must be tackled. Education is indeed most often the foundation for achieving our objectives. Levels of educational attainment have a direct influence on the employment opportunities of young people and therefore also on their social inclusion and despite the current economic crisis we must not allow this potential to be wasted."@en1
