"President, I abstained on this report as I believe the UN is in urgent need of review and reform. There is little point in considering a Security Council seat for the EU if the whole system of representation is in question. In particular, where is the Security Council representation for Asia? At present, that continent is represented only by China, a non-democratic country with an appalling record on human rights. Where is the call for a seat for India, whose population is fast approaching that of China’s and whose political, economic and strategic power is regionally and globally significant? Before thinking about the EU’s voice at the UN, we need to consider how the current UN might be changed for the better. Proper Security Council representation for the world’s biggest democracy would represent a big step in the right direction."@en1
