"Mr President, the report we have just adopted, entitled ‘On the situation of fundamental rights in the European Union’, is comprehensive and represents a breakthrough in several aspects. Its presentation of children’s rights and basic social rights merits special attention. I deem it exceptionally good that at long last it takes a correct approach to the problems and rights of traditional national minorities, laying down the principles of self-governance and language use, areas in which the Union has been quite late in creating norms.
This is why I supported and fought for the adoption of this report, and this is why the Hungarian delegation of the Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats also voted for it, in spite of several debatable adopted paragraphs which we cannot agree with, as we consider it unacceptable to regulate certain issues at EU level."@en1
