"− I support this report which will safeguard workers' rights, ending exploitation of working hours. The Working Time Directive limits the working week to 48 hours, averaged over 12 months and will come into force by 2012. I support the classification of on-call time as inclusive of these hours, allowing workers more time with their families. Working more than 48 hours a week poses serious health risks, most importantly the link between long hours and cardiovascular disorder, diabetes mellitus and musculoskeletal problems. I support the positive impact that this report will have on health and safety in the workplace and the prevention of accidents. Many accidents have been contributed to sleep deprivation because of excessive working hours, namely the Paddington Rail Crash. This report will bring a real improvement in living standards to thousands of Scottish employees which is why I support it."@en1
